This study analyzes how political violence affects women's representation in Ecuador from a human rights perspective. I have specifically focused on the right to equality between men and women, as my experience in women's spokespersons and movements to which I belong has led me to identify this as one of the most deeply rooted forms of violence in our province, and, why not, in our country. Using a qualitative methodology with a descriptive-documentary approach, data from reports, academic studies, and specific cases are examined to understand the manifestations and consequences of this violence in the political sphere. The findings reveal that women in public office face harassment, threats, defamation, and physical and psychological attacks, which limits their participation, discourages other women from entering politics, and perpetuates structures of exclusion due to their disregard for decisions or positions of authority for which they have applied or been elected in the case of politics when they reach these positions. Despite legislative progress toward gender parity, the implementation of sanctions by the TCE is deficient, reinforcing a hostile environment for women in politics and fostering fear and mistrust due to noncompliance with these sanctions. According to UN Women, Ecuador has a high prevalence of gender-based political violence, both during the election process for the position to which they are applying, thus affecting diversity in decision-making and weakening democracy. I have been particularly able to see these effects and the discrimination experienced by women who want and aspire to participate in politics. This analysis concludes by stating that public policies must be developed that not only promote gender equality but also protect women against violence and provide them with access to resources and support networks in the political sphere.
