San Rafael, Otavalo, is known for its rich artisanal tradition, where local artisans have created beautiful pieces using totora reeds, a natural material abundant in the region. However, behind these works of art lie stories of hard work, unfair working conditions, and inadequate prices. In this context, the implementation of fair trade emerges as a powerful tool to positively transform the lives of artisans and their communities. Fair trade, in addition to guaranteeing a reasonable price for the artisans' work, also seeks to promote decent working conditions, protect the environment, and empower local communities. In this project, we will explore how the implementation of fair trade can make a difference in the world of totora reed crafts in San Rafael, Otavalo, improving the lives of those behind each work of art and promoting a more equitable and sustainable economy. Ethical and social principles are the foundations that will allow producers to guarantee fair working conditions and decent fees, thereby establishing a better lifestyle that will proportionally change depending on the success of the implementation of the aforementioned measure. It is important to emphasize that a fair price also takes into account the social and environmental costs involved in production. In a globalized world where commercial competition is rampant, fair trade allows for market entry under equitable conditions based on principles of social awareness and freedom of commercial relations, fostering innovation and new strategies.
