Resumen
Existen diferencias interculturales en el desarrollo cognitivo de los niños. Un aspecto vital de este desarrollo se da en la primera infancia y se conoce como funciones ejecutivas (FE) y está influido por variables extrafamiliares. El término FE caracteriza a un conjunto de habilidades cognitivas que permiten planificar, organizar, controlar y regular el comportamiento. Las habilidades de FE en la edad preescolar se han identificado como un fuerte predictor del rendimiento académico e involucra múltiples factores extrafamiliares que tienen impacto dependiendo de cómo se combinen y se modulen. Por ello, es importante que los padres y los educadores conozcan cómo influyen estas variables y que promuevan las condiciones más favorables para implementar este conocimiento en intervenciones y políticas destinadas a mejorar el desarrollo de las FE con el objetivo de fomentar el rendimiento académico de los niños.
There are cross-cultural differences in children's cognitive development. A vital aspect of this development occurs in early childhood and is known as executive functions (EF) and is influenced by extrafamilial variables. The term EF characterizes a set of cognitive skills that allow planning, organizing, controlling and regulating behavior. EF skills in preschool age have been identified as a strong predictor of academic performance and involve multiple extrafamilial factors that have an impact depending on how they are combined and modulated. Therefore, it is important that parents and educators know how these variables influence and that they promote the most favorable conditions to implement this knowledge in interventions and policies aimed at improving the development of EF with the aim of promoting children's academic performance.
