Kichwa as a native language is one of the essential elements that contribute to the construction of the identity of the indigenous peoples of the Ecuadorian territory. In this sense, the present research work arises from the need to understand the relevance of the Kichwa language in the educational dynamics of the Intercultural Bilingual Educational Unit “Presbítero Amable Herrera” of the Otavalo canton. To this end, the objectives of the study focus on analyzing the teachers' perception of the usefulness of the Kichwa language and its integration into the classroom; identifying the degree of appreciation and practical use of the Kichwa language; and establishing the impact of teaching the Kichwa language on the strengthening of cultural identity. The methodology is based on the development of a quantitative research with a descriptive level and a non-experimental cross-sectional design. For data collection, three multiple-choice surveys with 10 structured questions each, were designed and directed to 2 teachers and 20 students. The survey´s questions were evaluated by means of a Likert scale with a valuation range of 1 to 4 points. A grouping of categories based on the specific objectives of the study was also carried out, which allowed for a more structured view. The results show that the didactic materials available in the institution are inadequate to integrate the Kichwa language effectively in the classroom. On the other hand, the scarce participation of students in conversations or academic debates where Kichwa is used contributes to the devaluation of the language in the socio-educational context. Likewise, learning Kichwa has failed to strengthen the connection with cultural roots, affecting the sense of belonging and identity of Kichwa-speaking students.
